El Salvador Citizens Re-Register for TPS NOW
| Trump immigration policies have caused havoc on the peace of mind of an estimated 200,000 nationals of El Salvador with Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) who are currently living in the United States.
This article provides an update on TPS for nationals of El Salvador and some strategies on how to prepare for the expiration of the program.
El Salvador TPS Update
The U.S. government has announced that TPS for El Salvador will end on September 9, 2019. Those individuals who currently possess TPS may re-register one last time from January 18, 2018 through March 19, 2018.
However, on September 9, 2019 anyone on TPS will no longer be legally living in the U.S.
Jan 2018 Strategies for El Salvador TPS
There are several possible U.S. immigration strategies for citizens of El Salvador. These strategies do not apply to everyone. However, they can be considered in some instances.
Because of the complexity, all TPS holders should consult with a qualified immigration lawyer to seek options.
A few possible immigration strategies for citizens of El Salvador include:
- Advance Parole
- Relocating to states within the jurisdiction of the 9th circuit court or 6th circuit court
- adjustment of status
- change of status

If you want to maintain Temporary Protected Status (TPS) until the program’s termination date on Sept. 9, 2019, you must re-register during the 60-day re-registration period that runs from Jan. 18, 2018, through March 19, 2018. We encourage you to register as soon as possible within the 60-day re-registration period.
